Animation & AR (1/3)

In collboration with Rockey Ke

In teams of two (or three), overlay an animated story or a piece of animated information (motion graphics) into the real world using Adobe After Effects, Aero, and augmented reality.

Create some assets for your project. You can use hand-drawn, cutout, or collage techniques. Think about the real-world location or setting this story might take place in and what assets you’ll need to create this animation.

For this project assignment/ I partnered with Rockey and we are planning to create an animation in a real world setting using Augmented Reality and After Effects. We discussed different ideas that we had for the project and we came up with the idea to use the window frame of a moving subway cart as a frame to animate inside of. I think that this would be an interesting project because often time people get bored during a subway ride and it serves the perfect opportunity to exercise creativity. I also thought that it would be interesting to create an alternate reality to the passengers where it could creates a contrast with the city scape that we are residing in and offer some sort of escape during their subway ride.

Inspiration

︎︎︎The Morning Show: Opening Sequence
I was really interested by the opening sequence of The Morning Show, a TV show on Apple TV where the subject matter are just simple geometric shapes, mostly circles. The animation used for this sequence is really captivating in that even though they only use simple shapes, the animation and effects that are created with the circles create a nice narrative and also visual experience as well.

︎︎︎Pixar Soul
Another source of inspiration that I was reminded of was the animation techniques used in the Pixar film Soul. I think the animation techniques in this film are relevant to this project because of the combination of 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional elements that create a really interesting visual experience as well. I think that these techniques can be used with the shape of the window of the subway doors.

Sketches

︎︎︎Rockey and I discussed that some of the elements that we wanted to include in are animation were 2D and 3D shapes, figures/characters, and possibly landscapes and scenery.

︎︎︎I tried possible variations of how a simple shape could transform within this animation.
