Assignment 4: Sketches and Prototyping

Current Thoughts on Thesis:

I think that I am still rooted in the research process and have a lot of work left to do in that department. I am also starting to think about what format my thesis will take and how much I want to expand it beyond just a webpage/web-based tool. I think that sketching and prototyping different options brought a lot of questions up for myself and I am planning to develop some more hi-fidelity prototypes going forward. Also in thinking about expanding the project beyond the web, I really would like to consider what kinds of formats or tools would make the most interactive experience and what would users find most useful or helpful to emerge themselves into this project and the intention behind it.

Idea #1- Interactive Archive/Generative Design Tool

The first idea that I developed is the web-based interactive archive of signages and the generative design tool that is the main bulk of my thesis project. I imagine that whether I expand the project to beyond the web, this format would serve as the main attraction of the project. I am thinking about a landing page that contains a visual collage/archive of the signages that I compile which could then lead to some information about the location that the user interacts with. From there the user would be guided to the design tool page where they can manipulate and create some generative design/typography using the original signage and the result will be displayed on the singular archive page specifically for the location selected. I’m still toying with the idea of whether the user should be able to add their results to this archive page or if that would be too complicated because it would involve some backend work.

Idea #2- Interactive Archival Book

This idea really stems from my desire to create a tactile interaction or artifact as a part of my project. This idea would involve a photographic archive of storefronts, logos, signages, objects that represent certain locations, etc. I would like to have some kind of interactive element to this such as a QR code that would connect the user back to my main project format which would be the web based tool and archive. I’m also thinking about if this format should be a part of my project, whether the book format should be expandable, or have some sort of element that is different from a traditional book format.

Idea #3- AR
Using AR honestly seems a bit daunting, but I think that using it as an extension of my project would be a really interesting way for users to have a more tactile and interactive experience with my project. I am envisioning an experience where users can point a device at the signage of a specific location included in my project, and they can view the archive page of the location (the one on my web project) and have a interactive, scrollable moodboard type of view of the generated designs using the original signage.

Initial Sketches of Prototypes:

︎︎︎These are some of the initial rough sketches that I started in the last class session. Most of them are the same idea as the ones that I developed for this week, but simply more paired down and developed ideas.
