Final Project: Animating in Unity

Create an animated Cornell Box. Cornell boxes are usually made from different found objects and imagery, arranged together to build a world or a story.

  • Pick a theme and aesthetics for your box (victorian, cyberpunk, kawaii, etc)
  • Include at least 4 animated elements.

The theme that I chose for my Cornell box was a loose interpretation of surrealism rendered in 3D, mostly inspired by the Little Theater by Salvador Dali and Magritte.

Animation

There are multipled animated elements in this composition, some of them are simply animated with no trigger and three of the components (the car, the sphere, and the Chess piece) are triggered by key triggers to transition into a different behavior.

Inspiration

One of my main inspirations for this Cornell box project was ‘The Little Theater’ by Salvador Dali which I came by at the MoMa- I wanted to draw inspiration from this specific piece because of the fact that Cornell was also a surrealist artist and I really enjoyed the ambience and depth that is depicted in this piece. I thought it would be an interesting theme to follow for this project in creating a 3D rendition of a Cornell box.

I also took some inspiration from Magritte’s works for compositional references and also the scalability of objects that highlights the surrealist concepts, with the absurdity and hyperrealism coexisting in one space.

3D Assets

(All assets were found in Unity asset store)

All of the assets used for this project were found in the Unity Asset store- I tried to pick objects that would harmonize and some that were totally out of context. Since I wanted to depict four scenes that would seem cohesive as a whole, I first envisioned an array of objects that would build a single scene and branched off of those ideas.

Conclusion

Overall, I am happy with the way my Cornell box came out as a final product- there were some elements that I wanted to further experiment but had some trouble with such as adding sound or creating smoother animations with Rigidbody that would create more realistic movements. I think that this project was a very good introduction into animating in Unity and I would definitely love to create more projects and experiment with Unity.
