Applying Animation in AR

Although we had originally planned to animate this sequence within the frame of a subway window, we attempted to do this multiple times but had trouble with anchoring the animation in this setting. It seemed that in a moving subway train, the particles in Aero were not able to detect a stable surface to anchor the canvas on.

As alternative options, we tried to anchor the animation on different surfaces such as different walls and pillars in the subway station. I also tried a separate experimentation where I used a frame to anchor the canvas too which seemed to work better. I definitely feel like if we experiment further with different AR applications or methods, we could potentially achieve our original goal but would ultimately have to cater to multiple difficulties and conditions that come with applying AR within the subway.

What is your project concept?
The concept of our project was to work with the window frames within the subway- we wanted to create a sort of other worldly environment through the use of animation and AR. In terms of the narrative, we show the progression of a simple shape transitioning into different elements but also staying cohesive by retaining the spherical shape throughout the sequence.

What was successful?

I am happy about the fact that like we planned originally, we were able to experiment with both two dimensional and three dimensional animation techniques and also was able to utilize the frame and the environment that we chose to find ways to interact with and utilize for transitions. However, we did have some difficulty in placing our animation in the environment that we originally wanted to use which was the window of a subway car.

What would you do differently?

I definitely think that there is room for improvement in terms of how smooth the animation is, especially in parts such as when the cloud is bouncing on the frame or when the shark eats the fish. Also, I chose not to work with the z-axis too much because it made the process too difficult at this point of my After Effects experience, but I think that in the future there are several elements that I could play around with to advance this piece. I also think that instead of choosing such a specific location to place the animation on, I would have multiple options to explore with since we did have some trouble with this process.

What did you learn from this assignment?

I definitely learned a lot more about working with After Effects and animation as well as creating an Augmented Reality piece. I learned the limitations that exist within creating an AR animation piece especially when using an application like Aero and that there are certain limits in the App that we must comply with.
