Sound and Space

The objective of this assignment is to transport the audience to a specific location using sound.

Part 1.

  • Meet with your group and decide on what you are creating.
  • Choose your object.
  • Make a blog post that help explain your collaborative and artistic intentions - Be specific:
    • Diagram the arc, describe the space and possible actions happening, find sound references to share, draft a rough script.Ensure that you are focusing on environment and setting.

Object:

The object that we chose for our project is a rock that we found near the river. It is a rock with some moss which indicates that it was found near water and we thought that it could be a metaphoric object that can relate to our narrative.

Setting:

The location that we selected for this project is the Brooklyn bridge. We collected sounds on and near the Brooklyn bridge, creating possible scenarios that we could create with our compiled audio files. We tried to collect as much variety in sounds as possible, such as waves crashing, surrounding sounds such as children laughing by the park and trains passing. We also tried to get a contrast between sounds that were more apparently loud and disruptive and those that would serve as a ambient counterpart in order to use in different parts of the narrative.

Plot:

The plot that we started to think about was more imaginative than literal- we wanted to create a fictional storyline with the realistic sounds that we compiled. We imagine the protagonist of this story to be speedily walking on the bridge, surrounded by the chaotic environment of a flurry of people and sounds.

Narrative Arc:

As the narrative heightens from the sound of the chaotic environment, we imagined that there would be a dramatic event or conflict, such as the protagonist hearing a large plummeting sound into the water creating a sudden halt to the busy movements on and near the bridge. From that climax where the protagonist enters panic, we wanted to switch to the sound of an alarm that wakes up the protagonist into reality making the previous scenario just a dream.
