Sound and Space (1/2)

The objective of this assignment is to transport the audience to a specific location using sound.

Assemble, edit and export your sound piece into a soundscape or sound-walk.

Breakdown of our narrative arc

We broke our narrative into three sections, beginning, middle, and end so that we can effectively work on each part and edit the audio clips we collected into a part of the story arc. I worked on the latter part of the story which was when the protagonist is waking up from his dreamlike-state while they are zoning out waiting for the light to change at the crosswalk. With the sudden noise of the crosswalk alarm, the protagonist wakes out of his daydream and carries on with walking through the flurry of chaotic city sounds.

The object we chose for representing this audio experience was this rock that we found near the river under the Brooklyn bridge. We chose it because the rock seems like one that would be found near water and wanted the audience to visualize the scene that we wanted to depict. Also, in some ways the rock is a metaphor for the protagonist that we are portraying in our narrative.

In terms of the actual plot of the story, we kept a majority of the elements that we had during our rough draft stage for the final version because we felt that we had a well planned and structured narrative. Also, we were able to find sounds that supported and constructed our desired transitions and flow that we found to be successful in the end. For moments that we thought needed more specific sounds that we did not record at our location, such as the bubbling of the water or the stepping sounds, we used found sources.
