PART II

1.

I tried to create a self-portrait using the basic 2D primitives and lines that we learned on p5.js that we learned during the first class of our course. I used ellipses and arcs mostly to create the shapes of my face, ears, eyes, and lips and also used lines to add other details for the features of the face.

2.

I first sketched out my idea for this self portrait in physical form before I started working in the p5.js editor which I think was really helpful in the process. I think that I was successful in adding all of the features that I wanted to include- since I was only using primitive shapes, I wanted to keep it minimal but also convey that it was a face. I also enjoyed the use of color and finding what exactly I liked in the composition and am happy with the way it turned out.

3.

At one point during the process, I was debating whether to add more detail to the sketch. I tried to add more texture to my hair using ellipses and lines but it did not turn out quite how I wanted to I had to revert back to a more simple composition. Ultimately, I think that I am satisfied that I left this particular sketch to be minimal because adding more details would have led to more complications to the image I originally wanted. I also did have some trouble navigating through the rotation and positioning of shapes, but went through trial and error and figured out exactly how I can place shapes where I intended them to be .

4.

As mentioned before, initially, I was struggling with rotating arcs and lines and how to start and arc and end it where I wanted it to be. I also started to think about if there was a way to create more line styles or decorations that can be used in the sketch as well (such as dotted, wavy, etc.)

5.

As I studied graphic design during my undergrad, the majority of my work was based in 2 dimensional mediums such as books, posters, branding, photography, etc. I think that at one point I felt some constraint just working in these mediums because there is a an issue with universal accessibility and also sustainibility. I also felt a need for my projects to be more interactive and dynamic which is how I want to relate computation to my previous works and projects. I think computation will allow me to move towards the digital space where I can still work with tactical and approachable mediums but in a wider range of possibilities. For example, I created a project during undergrad where I tried to create an experience through design where the viewer could experience being at a vintage store without physically being there. (Link to Project) I think that a project like this could really benefit from the use of more computation and technology to make the project more elevated and practical for wider use. Going forward with this term, I would like to make projects with similar content that I was previously working with, but with new mediums and strategies. Not meaning that I will recreate these projects, but like before I would like to find a topic that interests me whether it be a book, a person, an issue, etc, and come up with creative ways to present those topics in a new and innovative way with the use of computation.
