Cyberfeminism Index

Claire L. Evans, “Feminist Worldbuilding in the Australian Cyberswamp”, 2016

I’ve done several readings on the topic of cyberfeminism before and the concept honestly is quite hard to grasp for me in a holistic manner. I think that in some ways the lack of definition around this subject is what defines it though and I think it’s interesting how artists throughout history have created really interesting work pertaining to this topic. Looking at the way VNS Matrix has created work about cyberfeminism seems to be an evolutionary body of work that started out with print mediums for mass dissemination and has expanded to digital mediums. I think it’s interesting to think about the evolution of feminism in general to the creation and progression of the subgenre of cyberfeminism, and how the web has created another context for feminism. In all honesty I don’t know if I thought of the web as a patriarchal space before I came into contact with cyberfeminist studies such as these, but I think I thought of it more as a democratic space especially nowadays. But, I guess as the web is an extension of the real world at this point, it does carry the patriarchal burdens embedded in the way the infrastructures are built.
