Week 3 & 4 Assignment: Design System Poster

For this assignment in creating a political poster with the use of generative design systems, I chose the topic of gun control and the rise of school shootings in the US in recent years. I wanted to create a grid system that could be randomized and regenerated into a different version of the poster and I also thought that I wanted to keep the visuals of the poster less graphic and more stylized since the topic is so heavy and sensitive. Something I definitely wanted to try was to use typography and how I could manipulate the type to achieve different effects for different versions of the poster.

︎︎︎I sketched out some of the ideas for the modular grid system that I envisioned for this poster using variable typography and shapes.

︎︎︎This was the first print run that I did for the poster where I used the randomized grid system that uses the words “enough, is, enough”. I really liked the linguistic effect that the randomized grid produced but I was not happy with the image treatment especially with the color separation and the focal point seemed to be kind of lost.

︎︎︎For the second print run, I decided to try a different image treatment so I played with the bayer dithering effect with more stylized images and I also experimented with the scale of the type and shapes to create more variation. I originally intended to print a black layer on top of the pink layer but did not have enough time.

For the next and final print run I think that I will play with inverting the images so the background is less of a full bleed of color and continue to experiment with the scale and variability of the type and shapes. I also think adding a secondary slogan in some form would be more helpful in making it obvious that the poster is about gun control.
