Week 4 Assignment: Research for Character Creation Tools

This week I conducted research for Character Creation Tools by trying out different tools that exist and are in use. After using several of these tools I found some features to be extra useful and convenient and other not.

1. Fancy Plants

6/10

I found this tool to be quite easy to use and intuitive but also limited in choices and the outcomes were limited as well. I enjoyed the illustration style which made the finish outcome look cohesive and pretty but I wish there was some more variation of style such as line style or line width or color. Some features that I enjoyed from this tool were the shuffle tool and download features.

2. Ready Player Me

9/10

This tool was really cool to use and interact with especially because there was a photo submission and questionnaire before the character maker actually appeared. I really enjoyed the fact that the avatar can be interacted with by zooming in and out as well as where they faced to see the changes that were made. I also liked the tab format at the bottom of the interface which was intuitive and easy to use and go back to. I also thought that the way that the options for each section was presented was very simple but easily recognizable and well organized.

3. Rat Maker

8.5/10

This rat maker tool was very fun to interact with- it was as enjoyable as #2 but had a much simpler interface and less selectable options but nevertheless was very exciting to use. I thought that by having the options presented as text rather than small images gave it a element of surprise for the user. I enjoyed the handdrawn feel of the illustration and also the side by side interace layout was surprisingly helpful and easy to use. Lastly, the three buttons underneath the drawing were well placed and selected especially because they were all essential buttons for the user to use this tool.

4. PowerPuff Yourself

8/10

I had used this tool before and enjoyed the experience and decided to try it again. I think that the interface and experience itself is very similar to that of #2 but a simplified version. The layout and features are very minimalistic and simple and presented in a typical way that character creation tools usually are. But nevertheless there were no noticeable flaws during the process of using this tool especially because it was very easy and intuitive to navigate through it.
