Week 5 Assignment: Design System Poster

For this assignment in creating a political poster with the use of generative design systems, I chose the topic of gun control and the rise of school shootings in the US in recent years. I wanted to create a grid system that could be randomized and regenerated into a different version of the poster and I also thought that I wanted to keep the visuals of the poster less graphic and more stylized since the topic is so heavy and sensitive.

︎︎︎ I created a generative grid system using the words of the slogan “enough is enough” which I found to be a commonly used message found at protests against gun violence. I really enjoyed the effect that it created with different orders and combinations of the words, each poster had different impacts and different meanings which is what I initially had strived to achieve.

︎︎︎ I also used a randomized circle pattern layered on top of the images to represent how sacred and pure spaces such as playgrounds are being tainted by the fear of such mass shootings. I printed the posters in blue and red after some experimentation with other color combinations- Although it is quite a strong color combination, I felt that this combination felt the impactful for the context of this poster series. If I could further work on these posters, I would like to work on finding some more images that could work and try some other image treatments as well. I would also like to experiment more with the typography and maybe try to manipulate the typographpic treatment as well with some generative methods.
